by The bad news is that the Carolina Panthers are still the worst team in the NFL, by a significant margin. In fact, there were times during the first half of their 37-point loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday that we wondered how they would fare against the number one ranked college team in the country, Georgia.
The answer to that question has always been that even the worst team in the NFL would completely dominate and humiliate the best college team in the country, no matter how bad they looked on Sunday. But you could forgive Carolina fans for thinking otherwise now.
The Georgia Bulldogs at least have a capable starting quarterback, something the Panthers have been without for the past six years since franchise legend Cam Newton suffered his second shoulder injury at the hands of TJ Watt.
As expected, heading into Week 2, the quarterback position has been named the team’s biggest weakness by Bleacher Report’s scouting department. Here’s what they had to say.
“They weren’t in their game this weekend against New Orleans, as the Saints scored on the game’s first possession and never looked back en route to a 37-point win. That left Bryce Young and Dave Canales searching for answers, as the quarterback was particularly poor, going 13 of 30 for 161 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.”
For now, the Panthers have little choice but to keep starting Bryce Young and hope he can show a dramatic improvement. Starting veteran Andy Dalton offers no value or future, and it’s unlikely that undrafted rookie Jack Plummer will prove to be an upgrade over Young at this early point in his pro career.
If Young continues to falter, the Panthers’ front office will have to dig deep into their 2025 quarterbacks. At this point, we can confidently predict they’ll pick No. 1 overall in that draft, so they’ll be able to pick the best one. Right now, the top two prospects in the country are Georgia’s Carson Beck and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.
