Perhaps the most notable story from Week 1 in the NFL occurred before a single game had even started on Sunday, when Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill arrested by the police outside Hard Rock Stadium, hours before the Dolphins were set to open the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Officers saw Hill speeding without a seatbelt on, and he was pulled over. Not long after, Hill was aggressively pulled from his vehicle, placed on his stomach, and handcuffed. One of the officers involved was placed on administrative leave, and when the Bodycam footage has been releasedit didn’t exactly make the police any better.
On Wednesday, Hill was asked by reporters if he felt he did anything wrong in the situation. If his demeanor toward police officers could have been different, or if he could have kept his window down during the interaction. Hill responded that he could have done better.
“My whole life is about accountability, how can I be better?” Hill said. “So right now I have family members who are police officers. We’ve had conversations. Yeah, I will say I could have been better. I could have rolled down my window at that point. The thing about me is I don’t want attention, I don’t want cameras and phones pointed at you at that point. But at the end of the day, I’m a human being, I have to follow the rules, I have to do what anyone would do.
“Does that give them the right to literally beat the crap out of me? Absolutely not, but ultimately I wish I could go back and do things a little differently.”
This incident was quite hostile from the start. Hill reprimanded the police for knocking on his window, then rolled it up while he dealt with the officers. Then the more aggressive officer came in and pulled the star wide out of his vehicle.
Both Hill and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have called for the officer who pulled him from his vehicle to be fired. Hill is also considering filing a lawsuit against the Miami-Dade Police Department.
