England have a shortlist of four players for their next permanent manager, with one seen as the ‘dream candidate’.

England have a shortlist of four players for their next permanent manager, including a ‘dream candidate’.

Gareth Southgate stepped down from his post after the 2024 European Championship final, after eight years.

The English Football Association immediately began the process of replacing him and a host of names were linked with him.

But Lee Carsley took over as interim coach of the Under-21s and was responsible for the Nations League victories over both Ireland and Finland.

Carsley has been praised for his courageous decisions and for developing an appealing style of play that many have been calling for.

And while the former Everton midfielder has made a huge impression and is the favourite, he is no guarantee of the job.

According to The Telegraph, the FA still has a shortlist of four players and has been in contact with other managers.

Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Graham Potter are still in the running, but Jurgen Klopp has ruled himself out and Mauricio Pochettino has taken the vacant USMNT job.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola remains the FA’s absolute dream candidate and could be available in 2025 if he does not sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The Catalan, who has expressed interest in an international coaching academy but has no ambition to coach Spain, has had a monumental impact on English football since being appointed City manager in 2016.

Not only did he dominate the Premier League, winning six titles, but Guardiola is also credited with improving English players and changing the perception of football in this country.

City still want him to stay and they hope that will happen.

Carsley will serve as interim manager for six games, with the games against Greece and Ireland in November completing his term.

The FA will continue with the process until then and fully assess the situation.

England return to action under Carsley next month for Nations League matches against Greece and Finland.
