Key Points
- GTA 6 may only hit 30fps on the PS5 Pro.
- Despite the challenges, the PS5 Pro can deliver higher-quality gaming visuals.
The PS5 Pro was announced less than 48 hours ago and public opinion is not positive. The high price of $700/£700 and the lack of a vertical stand and disk drive have left fans “furious”.
Now, another setback for potential buyers is being reported: the game we’re most excited about, Grand Theft Auto 6, might be too much for the console. What’s more, the game reportedly won’t be able to run at 4K 60fps.
GTA 6 Will Reportedly Target 30FPS on PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro was revealed on Tuesday, showing off “three pillars” — a bigger GPU, advanced ray tracing and PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), AI upscaling, which will help boost frame rates. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’ll help with Rockstar’s next big adventure.
Speaking to Digital Foundry, IGN asked the experts whether Grand Theft Auto 6 could realistically run at 60 fps on Sony’s mid-generation refresh. Digital Foundry stated, “No. Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that are CPU-heavy,” adding, “The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5, and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60 fps when the base PS5 is targeting 30 fps. This isn’t a GPU issue; it’s a CPU issue.”
While this may sound drastic to fans, Digital Foundry clarifies that “every GTA game on their target platforms initially released at 30fps (or lower!), suggesting it may not be as disastrous as it initially sounds.
Digital Foundry admits that “all bets are off” in the unlikely event that Rockstar does target 4K60 on the standard PS5; however, they add that “what you’ll get will be higher quality visuals, but likely still running at similar frame rates [to the base console],” and that “If GTA 6 can’t maintain 30fps, the PS5 Pro can run the CPU at a 10 percent higher clock speed – giving you more stable performance.”
It’s another minor blow to the PS5 Pro’s long-overdue aesthetic, but that’s not stopping frustrated fans from getting excited. Early indications suggest the Pro will sell well, with fans already stocking up on the console’s detachable drive.
