Key Points
- PlayStation has unveiled the PS5 Pro to loud cheers as fans fume over its $700/£700 price tag.
- Fans are frustrated by the lack of games that take full advantage of the console’s capabilities, while others are outraged by the lack of a disc drive.
- The same story can also be seen on YouTube, where the PS5 Pro announcement trailer has already been liked more than 100,000 times.
PlayStation finally lifted the lid on the open secret that is the PS5 Pro today, giving us our first proper look at the console and an overview of what it’s capable of. It certainly seems like an impressive (if fairly pointless) piece of tech, and many people were bracing themselves for the announcement to be a huge blow to their wallets. PlayStation, however, has undoubtedly dropped the ball.
At the very end of the PS5 Pro announcement stream, it was revealed that the PS5 Pro will cost you a staggering $700/£700m, a price tag that is now being relentlessly mocked on social media by angry PlayStation fans. Almost every discussion you can find about the PS5 Pro is full of players being baffled by how PlayStation thinks it can get away with an expensive next-gen refresh when there are barely any games that will take advantage of it.
This post from Reddit user Turbostrider27 (which you can find above) on the PS5 subreddit is a good example. At the time of writing, there were nearly 10,000 comments, most of which were extremely negative.
People like user JackAndrewThorne are complaining about the lack of “excellent first-party console exclusives in the pipeline,” and are expressing disappointment in PlayStation’s recent shift to live service games. Meanwhile, many people are also outraged by the fact that this is the price of the machine without a disc drive, such as Surfinginstyle, who criticizes the company for “not adding a disc drive and making people pay more.”
PS5 Pro reveal trailer already has over 100,000 dislikes
You only need to head over to the PS5 Pro announcement trailer to find legions of angry fans, as the trailer currently sits at a whopping 107,000 dislikes and counting. It’s also racked up a similarly large number of comments, most of which are extremely negative and enraged about the same things as those on Reddit.
YouTube user @Tedakin, for example, sums up his feelings by saying, “$700. No disc drive. No stand. Unbelievable,” while there are plenty of people who worry that the PlayStation 6 will make things even more expensive, especially with the continued decline of Xbox.
Luckily, we still have Nintendo to turn to for reasonably priced consoles, and plenty of people are pointing out that for the price of a single PS5 Pro and a disc drive you could buy multiple Switches. With the announcement of the Switch 2 just around the corner (a console that will actually have games on it), you have to feel like the negativity surrounding PlayStation is only going to escalate further.
